Description

In recent years, a new fourth generation of light sources has emerged based on advanced storage-ring lattice concepts. This new approach enables a significant reduction in horizontal emittance compared with existing facilities. PETRA III at DESY is one of the brightest synchrotron radiation sources worldwide, serving a broad international and multidisciplinary user community through 25 specialized beamlines operating at a storage-ring energy of 6 GeV and a beam current of 120 mA. The PETRA IV project aims to upgrade the current synchrotron radiation source PETRA III at DESY into an ultra-low-emittance fourth generation of light source.
Within the framework of the PETRA IV project, the new experimental hall PXW, located in the western part of the DESY campus, will host additional PETRA IV beamlines. Radiation shielding calculations have been performed using the FLUKA Monte Carlo code to determine appropriate wall and ceiling thicknesses for the optics and experimental hutches. In addition, FLUKA simulations have been used to evaluate key parameters, such as beam offset in the optics hutch, which significantly influences radiation levels in the optic hutches. This work presents the current status of the PETRA III beamlines and the planned beamlines for PETRA IV, along with selected results from the shielding calculations for PETRA IV hutches, it also includes an investigation of beam-offset estimation for a monochromatic beamline, as well as the challenges and difficulties encountered in shielding design and construction implementation
