Description
KEK and CERN have shared a common interest in radiation safety at high-energy accelerators. To place this cooperation on a durable and operational footing, the two organisations concluded — within the general framework of their Agreement on Collaborative Work (ICA-JP-0103) — a dedicated implementing appendix (KN6005/HSE, Appendix 28) on the Research and Development of Radiation Protection for High-Energy Accelerators, which entered into force in June 2024 for an initial period of five years. The appendix defines concrete mechanisms that directly enable joint experimental work: the mutual provision of beam time and facilities, the loan of equipment and in-house analytical tools, the exchange of personnel through Visiting Researcher and associated-member status, and joint data analysis with a view to common publication. Its scope includes the generation of benchmark data for Monte Carlo radiation-transport codes, shielding-calculation methodologies, radioisotope production and residual dose rates, the radiological characterisation of accelerator and experiment components, radiation monitoring, and radioactive-waste minimisation. In this contribution we introduce this framework and report on the personnel exchange and experimental programme that KEK and CERN have carried out together since 2015. A particular emphasis is placed on making the resulting data available to the community — through publications that include the full data in numerical form and through their compilation in shielding-benchmark databases such as SINBAD. We hope that this experience can serve as a model for the international cooperation and project implementation that SATIF seeks to foster.
