Description
The SOLEIL II storage ring upgrade project [1, 2] is ongoing and aims at reducing drastically the horizontal emittance of the electron beam from 4 nm.rad for the present ring down to 80 pm.rad for the SOLEIL II new 4th generation storage ring light source. The corresponding long shutdown is scheduled between end of 2028 and end of 2030, when user operation will resume. The first half year will be dedicated to the deconstruction of all the machine equipment and auxiliary devices that were present in the storage ring during SOLEIL operation within the last 19 years.
During operation, all the 2.75 GeV electrons injected into the storage ring were lost and therefore able to activate the accelerator equipment. This paper will present the history records of the accumulated charges, the losses distribution along the ring and how they are simulated for activation assessment.
According to French Nuclear Regulation Authority (ASNR) requirements, a very detailed 3D model of the accelerator in the concrete tunnel was used to perform very extensive Monte Carlo simulations with the FLUKA code [3, 4]. This paper will present and discuss the results obtained so far and SOLEIL’s foreseen decommissioning strategy and waste management procedure to address to ASNR for authorization clearance.
