Description
In 2023, Institute for Rare Isotope Science (IRIS) successfully conducted a commissioning test using Rare isotope Accelerator complex for ON-line experiments (RAON) to accelerate a heavy-ion beam to low energy and transmit it to the experimental area. Prior to official operation, the facility must pass a regulatory inspection. In particular, the shielding design section validates the suitability of Monte Carlo-based shielding calculations by measuring dose rates outside the shielding wall during maximum beam power operation. However, during the initial operational phase, outside measurements are impractical due to the extremely low beam power.
In this study, to verify the suitability of the shielding calculation under low-power conditions, a target material with conditions more conservative than the source term of the shielding calculation was used. In addition, neutron and gamma detectors were installed around the beam dump to measure the radiation dose rate during operation, and the suitability was evaluated by comparing these measurements with the Monte Carlo shielding calculation.
