Description
Serpent is a multi-purpose, three-dimensional, continuous-energy Monte Carlo neutron and photon transport code developed at VTT Technical Research Centre of Finland. Originally established in reactor physics and criticality safety, its scope has broadened considerably in recent years toward applications of direct interest to the SATIF community, including radiation shielding and damage, dosimetry and detector modelling, and fusion neutronics.
Recent developments include new physics and radiation-source sampling models, improved energy-deposition and damage estimates, and extended particle-cascade transport capabilities, supported by new methodologies and libraries in nuclear data handling that extend to transport and activation/transmutation calculations.
New variance-reduction techniques, hybrid tallying schemes, advanced detectors, source characterization methods, and sensitivity and uncertainty quantification capabilities are complemented by broader geometry support and interfaces for coupling with other transport and multi-physics codes, some of which are now part of VTT's Kraken framework, extending Serpent's applicability to complex, realistic problems relevant to shielding and dosimetry applications.
As this application space has grown, so has the emphasis on verification, validation, and quality assurance: Serpent's development and release process now relies on a structured V&V program aligned with NQA-1 and ISO 9001, reflecting its increasing use in contexts where qualification and traceability of results are required.
