Mendeleev's periodic table successfully groups atomic elements according to their chemical and spectroscopic properties. However, it becomes insufficient for describing the detailed properties of exotic matter, such as highly charged ions, highly excited atoms or ions, rare isotope ions, and antimatter. The confinement, manipulation, and measurement of such exotic matter using traps and other confinement devices are of significant importance in both fundamental and applied sciences.
